What Makes Linoleum A Solid Choice For Your Home

Trying to decide the best flooring for your home? Maybe it’s time to consider linoleum.

Linoleum is increasing in popularity for a variety of reasons. It’s eco-friendly. It’s easy to install. And the color and style choices make any look possible. What Makes Linoleum A Solid Choice For Your Home

Linoleum is a resilient flooring material, which means it’s flexible and soft to the touch, bouncing back into its original shape. Though many people confuse it with vinyl, they are two separate things. Linoleum was invented in the 19th century, and is made from linseed oil and other materials, including cork dust, pin rosin and wood flour. Because it is made from all natural products, it is a great option if you are attempting to go green at home.

One of the best features of linoleum is its longevity. With many flooring choices, we begin counting the months almost immediately as to when it will need replacing. Linoleum is incredibly durable and can last up to 40 years if it is properly maintained.

Linoleum is also easy to maintain. Regular sweeping and occasional mopping can keep it in good condition indefinitely.

What makes it an increasingly popular choice is its health benefits. Linoleum is made from a renewable resource, linseed oil. And when laid in place, it does not emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) so it won’t cause indoor air pollution. That can be a welcome relief for anyone suffering from asthma, allergies, or other respiratory problems.

And because it’s a softer material, it’s comfortable underfoot. It’s a great addition to kitchens, where standing for long periods of time is a standard. It’s also good for aging in place remodels, where falling may be an issue.

Linoleum is one of the more versatile flooring options available, with a wide variety of colors, styles and patterns available. You can create unique mosaics with tile linoleum, as it is very easy to cut to exact specifications.

Think linoleum might be the perfect choice for you home? Stop by today and see all of the options available to you.

Vinyl or Laminate, Which Is Best For You?

Ready to give your home hardwood floors throughout?

Not so fast.

While Coloradans love hardwood flooring, your holdback may be with performance. If you’ve ever had hardwoods warp because of too much water and humidity in the kitchen, bathroom or entryways, should you really try it again?Vinyl or laminate which is best for you

There is an alternative to using hardwood flooring. You can still have the same look and feel, but without the risks.

Vinyl, especially vinyl plank flooring, and laminate flooring are both widely touted as durable, economical, and easy to install, easy to maintain. And both can be great additions to your home. But which one is the best for you?

Vinyl flooring has been around for decades. And because of that, many associate it with the look and feel of past generations. Yet with new technology and the introduction of better looking flooring, vinyl flooring can be the workhorse in any room in your home. Now vinyl comes in plank shapes that mimics real wood. It has “click” qualities that allows you to snap boards together for the same look and feel of real wood.

Laminate flooring has also undergone significant changes throughout the past few years. By using stronger technology, more insulating qualities, and real look and feel, laminate gives the ability to have wood look throughout your home, with the ease of being able to install it yourself.

What to choose in the bathroom?

The deciding factor in the bathroom is water. If you have kids that like to play in the sink or tub, if you have a lot of action from family and guests, if you want easy to maintain flooring that you don’t have to worry about, vinyl is the choice for you. Vinyl beats laminate hands down in high water, high moisture situations.

What to choose in the kitchen?

No one knows your kitchen like you do. While you don’t expect water to frequently pool on the floor, the kitchen can be subjected to water around the sink and dishwasher. If you have a history of spills and messes, vinyl may be the way to go. If you’ve always maintained a neat and orderly kitchen, laminate may suit your needs just fine.

Which one offers the best pricing?

When it comes to cost, vinyl planks and laminate are fairly equal. You can find both vinyl and laminate in a wide range of costs, everything from budget friendly and affordable all the way to luxury styles.

Which is the easiest to install?

Traditional vinyl in large rolls can be difficult for a homeowner to handle, and cut and lay into place. But today’s vinyl comes in plank format to resemble real wood. It’s even easier to lay than vinyl tiles because there are fewer of them to lay in place.

Laminate requires a foam moisture underlayment that can be quickly rolled out and taped into place. Some laminate comes with underlayment already pre-attached to the back. While laminate is easy to lay into place, you will have to cut pieces with a saw in order to customize. But all in all, both are easy enough for the DIYer to bring into their homes.

Looking for resale value?

Depending on your home’s value and neighborhood, people may perceive vinyl and laminate in different ways. Buyers look for ease in the bathroom and may welcome vinyl planks for their ability to withstand daily activity while looking good in the process. However, laminate is a close substitute for hardwood flooring, and as such holds a moderately good value for buyers looking for modern style.

What’s the best choice for you? Stop by today and compare the differences.

Dealing With Seams and Your Vinyl Floor

Depending on the size of your room, chances are you’ll have a seam somewhere in your room after you install your new vinyl floors. When seams are handled in the proper way, you’ll have a floor that looks great and lasts a long time without any problems. Yet if you’ve ever had vinyl floors where the seam begins to pull back and fray, you know the problems that can quickly arise if not handled correctly.Dealing With Seams and Your Vinyl Floor

Like any flooring, there is a proper way to install and maintain your new vinyl flooring for the longest life possible.

How wide is vinyl flooring?

The standard width of a roll of vinyl flooring is 12 feet. It comes on a roll, so there is no set length. If your room is wider than 12 feet, the room will be pieced together to create one seamless look.

How do you conceal vinyl flooring upon installation?

When vinyl flooring is laid, the best way to conceal seams is by treating them with a seam coater. This creates a virtually seamless floor and prevents the seams from opening through wear.

Where should the vinyl seems be in a room?

When it comes to piecing together vinyl flooring, there is no right or wrong answer. In most cases the seam will lie in a spot agreed upon between the installer and the homeowner. Try to seam the pieces of the vinyl flooring in a low traffic area. It should never lie where furniture will be moved across it continuously, such as under a kitchen table.

Do I need extra vinyl if it requires piecing together?

It depends on the pattern of your flooring. In order to match patterns at the seams, it may require an additional amount of vinyl flooring at the time of purchase. Talk with your flooring consultant to make sure you have enough for finishing.

Do vinyl flooring seams require extra maintenance?

In most cases, no. Vinyl is a low maintenance flooring, that requires regular sweeping, vacuuming, and a damp mop to remove stains and spills. However, you may find over time the edges of the seam coming loose. If you have an open seam, don’t procrastinate. Repair it quickly to maintain the look of your vinyl flooring longer. You can do so by using a seam sealing kit, apply adhesive to the edge of the seam, and press it back into place. Remember, the faster you fix the problem, the less likely it will have of escalating into a larger problem overall.
